2006-02-02, Ecotone Publishing - Ecological Engineer Volume 1: Keen Engineering is First in a Series to Highlight Significant Role of Engineering in Sustainable Design and Keen’s Contributions to Best Practices
KANSAS CITY, Mo., February 1, 2006 – Ecotone Publishing LLC, the first exclusive green building and design book publisher, recently launched a new title, The Ecological Engineer Volume 1: Keen Engineering (ISBN: 0 – 9749033-4-5), authored by David R. Macaulay and Jason F. McLennan. The new book gives an inside look into the practices and principles used by Keen Engineering, now part of the Stantec Group, one of the most innovative and forward-looking engineering teams in North America, to produce structures, systems and technologies that embody sustainable design.
“This is the first book to show examples and explain the engineer’s role in pushing design teams to achieve a new level of energy efficiency,” said McLennan. “This accessible resource will appeal to the practicing engineers, architects and designers, as well as students looking for a source of solid and effective ecological principles, “he added.
Organized into three sections – Practice, Principles and Projects – the book describes real-world examples of green design from the perspectives of engineers and architects who worked on building projects throughout the world. The book contains photographs and illustrations depicting innovative projects completed by Keen over the last 15 years and a set of diagrams to guide the engineer through the design process. The stories and narrative provide a situational setting and historical background to the design process itself. KEEN Engineering addresses topics such as energy conservation, ventilation and lighting and lists new technologies and strategies that make high performance and distinctive design cost effective.
“We have always made sustainability an integral part of our business practices and have continually pushed our clients to the edge,” said Kevin R. Hydes, president of Keen. “We hope the stories and examples outlined in the book will motivate other engineering firms and design team members to more aggressively promote these important principles in all of their projects.”
KEEN Engineering is the first volume of the new book series, The Ecological Engineer; books that commemorate the most innovative engineers in North America. Ecotone plans to release additional volumes in the near future.
KEEN Engineering is available online and at bookstores nationwide beginning in November, 2005. For more information or to order the book, please visit http://www.ecotonedesign.com.
